Letting in the Light | Digital Photography

My name is Emma Trevino and I’m a photo major here at AACC. I have explored both digital and analog photography over the past few years, but I currently gravitate more towards the latter, with the darkroom being my happy place and its dimly-lit activities being my favorite by far. I have also explored alternative photographic processes, such as cyanotype and Van Dyke brown prints.

Self-portraiture has been my specialty almost since the start of my photographic journey; I find that stepping in front of the camera allows me to explore myself in ways I never would have considered if I had remained hiding behind it. I often find myself crawling into strange spaces, playing with slow shutter speeds, and manipulating light and shadow for my projects. I also have an affinity for the black and white aesthetic, as is showcased by the majority of my work.

Also important to note is that my work is open to interpretation. While most of my work is created with distinct concepts in mind, I don’t like to limit viewers to my ideas. My interpretation of my work may be entirely different from yours, and I prefer it that way! Learning to think freely and critically about art, and realizing that all perspectives can be right, has become one of the most enjoyable parts of being a student and also allowed me to grow as an artist.

Moving forward, I hope to further explore different niches, such as fine-art, surrealist, and portrait photography. This semester, I will be exploring color photography in-depth for the first time. I also hope to explore videography. I have yet to decide where I will transfer after I finish at AACC, and my goals for after school are still uncertain. That said, career-wise, my main interests are documentarian photography and event photography.

And, of course, I need to thank my photography professor, Matthew Moore, who has, quite literally, taught me everything I know about photography. I could not have done any of this without you.
