Art at Home

The #GettyChallenge at AACC

What is the #GettyChallenge?

The Art At Home Challenge (#Gettychallenge) is a global project that emerged in early 2020, encouraging those around the world to experience art in a new way during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Promoted by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Tussen Kunst & Quarantaine Instagram page, social media followers are challenged to recreate a work of art using only materials they have at home.

Anne Arundel Community College Visual Arts Professor Jennifer Schuster assigned her Spring 2020 Image and Design (ART 262) students to participate in this challenge after classes were no longer being held in person. Students were required to recreate a series of their favorite works of art, and asked to incorporate objects and numbers that were relevant to the pandemic quarantine. Students used their recreations to reflect on the emotions they were experiencing during their self-imposed COVID-19 quarantine.

The project evolved into a collaboration with Professor Erik Dunham’s Web 2 (ART 270) class, who worked with the ART 262 students, treating them as “clients” to produce a series of responsive website galleries. The final design by Emily Vanderlinden was chosen by the students to house each students’ recreated artwork and their written reflections.
